When on Hornby Buy Local!

When you live on a land mass surrounded by water, buying local is often the only option. In fact, buying, selling, trading, and exchanging locally available goods and services is a fine art practiced among many of our island citizens. But in these changing economic times it seems like all of these activities are becoming more than a convenient way to get the stuff we need. Buying locally grown and produced items is a way to ensure the economic and social health of our community.
If you are visiting Hornby Island this summer, take your family to the Farmers’ Market to sample the local baked goods and treats. Consider buying locally crafted work to give as gifts for birthdays or special occasions later on in the year. Everything in the market must be made, baked, or grown on Hornby Island, so anything purchased there directly supports our island economy.
If you live on this fair isle, remember to take advantage of the Co-op’s monthly 10% discount and ask about how to order some of your staple food items in bulk. Did you know you can have your favourite wines and spirits ordered in to the Co-op liquor store? Ask them how you can do this at the till downstairs.
Pick up a Hornby Island Arts Council Studio Guide at the RealHornby table at the Market or on the Co-op porch and visit your favorite local artist. And have a look at the Shops & Services listings on this web site for everything from hand-crafted caravans to hydrobiking.
This summer consider putting your money where your heart is - on Hornby island - by supporting our island businesses.
