Island Gallery
The Island Gallery is a place, a group, an idea. The beauty and solitude of Hornby Island has been an artist-magnet for decades. Nestled in a grove of willows and apple trees just off Central Road, our gallery reflects this heritage. From traditional (and not-so-traditional) landscapes, to post-structuralist assemblage, to hand-felted wearables and all stops in between, the burgeoning diversity of island art is gathered in a new show every month. This coming together of artists from all backgrounds, emerging as well as acclaimed in Canada and worldwide, is inspirational to both artists and community.
The Hornby Island Artist Run Gallery was formed as an informal co-operative in 1994 with 20 initial members. This non-profit organization has continued to grow in scope and size with a current membership of over 60 island artists and craftspeople. A wide diversity of creative expression is showcased in our Gallery. This includes painting, sculpture and assemblage in a broad range of materials, drawing, photography and digitally based imagery, fiber arts, jewelry, willow basketry, and writing. The central element in the presentation of our work is the hanging of new exhibitions monthly. The curatorial committee designs these shows carefully, highlighting each member’s work in the context of others’, to create an outstanding experience for viewers. To celebrate and launch these exhibitions the artists host an evening reception for our community and visitors to Hornby Island.
