Hornby Island Community
Hornby's heart is the community which calls the island home. Many islanders came for a weekend, were enchanted, and never left. During the peak of the summer season our population swells to over 8,000 people, with a winter population of approx. 900. Hornby is no longer an "undiscovered" jewel, but the inventiveness, creativity and commitment to community remains. Most of our community organizations could not exist without the dedication and support of islanders. There are few who have not volunteered at a fundraising event, participated on a board or committee, built a trail or cooked a meal for someone in need. This culture of caring and involvement is something we are very proud of.
When on Hornby please take some time to visit the Recycling Depot and Free Store, which is a model for many other communities, a great place to drop off unneeded clothing and household goods. Shop locally, not only for art, but farm produce, groceries, recreation and healing arts providers. Drop into an event at the Community Hall or yoga class at New Horizons. Finally, take some time to talk to locals, find out about what makes us tick and how you can participate in being stewards of this breathtaking place.
The Hornby Island Community Economic Enhancement Corporation continues to explore ways to support the community in achieving economic sustainability and diversity. Real Hornby and this website were conceived to provide a platform for commerce, but just as importantly, to provide a place for you to get to know us.
Visit our History and Organizations pages for an overview of the community. Visit our People page for a photo essay by Wayne Wiens which highlights a cross section of islanders. The links page lists all the links represented throughout this site and will contain additional links if you are searching for accommodation or other local services.
