Hornby Island Artists
John Grunewald
John was born on an island, Manhattan, grew up in California, and then moved north in search of green. Ever drawn by islands, he has lived on a series of them since 1971, starting in Juneau, Alaska, then Sointula, BC, moving to Hornby Island in 1978. John has worked in wood since childhood, and has been doing custom furniture and cabinet design since the late 60’s, when he began his career designing specialized spinning equipment for a weaver’s guild. Working exclusively by commission, John’s designs strive for simple elegance that showcase the inherent beauty of wood. His work can be seen in many of the handmade homes on Hornby.
