Hornby Island Artists
Joe Ottman
Water, stone and art merge with Joe’s earliest childhood memories, but it was carving stone that entirely captivated him. Years of studying stone, art college and experience working in exhibit display at the Glenbow Museum, Calgary, led to sculptural work at the Vancouver Aquarium. Ironically, rather than carving stone he was now carving concrete to replicate rock formations and tidal pools for marine habitat exhibits. Years later Hornby’s rock captivated him. Today Joe creates family and pet portraits as well as constructing ponds, waterscapes and interior sculptured concrete which replicate Hornby rock formations. He sees these creations as vessels of serenity. As gathering places – complimenting their environments and harmonizing with nature.
