Hornby Island Artists
Dana Smith
Originating in France in the early 1400's floorcloths made their way overseas with North American settlers. The invention of linoleum flooring slowed the interest in floorcloths and by the 1920's they were virtually gone. Dana Smith's painted mats are a contemporary take on this old art.
As artist and founder of Flat Cat Mats, Dana, a 5 and a half year resident of Hornby, has always had an interest in visual art with a practical bent. She is now focusing her accumulated self-taught skills on the artfully made floorcloth. In a time where mass-produced products flood our lives, Dana feels proud to be a part of the re-emerging hand-made movement.
